In mid-2011 a drab, gray trailer popped up on the South side of East First Street. The trailer functions as a temporary office for workers on the Houston Restoration Project and the 2nd Avenue subway line. Lower East Side residents Jonathan Neville and Pebbles Russell took it upon themselves to combat the negative impacts the construction was having on residents and businesses, transforming the trailer into a rotating street gallery dubbed Centre-fuge Public Art Project. The goal was to have between 2 to 7 artists at a time create work on all visible sides of the structure with the art and artists changing over once every two months. After the first two "cycles," the trailer was opened to proposals and Centre-fuge became the grassroots project it is today!

Centre-fuge strives to bring together communities that are broken apart by congestion and blocked road-ways, with a dose of color and expression. Centre-fuge acts as a catalyst for the future pursuit of creativity within those who pass by.

Centre-fuge has chapters in both New York City and Miami and is dedicated to the re-purposing or beautification of construction-sites, transitional spaces, community parks and under appreciated structures into public works of art, helping communities to beautify, reclaim and empower their neighborhoods!
